Frequently asked questions
Absolutely! Provided you choose a reputable Koh Tao dive centre like Flow Divers, diving here is incredibly safe. Koh Tao Island is known for its calm waters, excellent visibility, and beginner-friendly dive sites. Plus, our hand-picked team of professional instructors is highly trained, and all our courses and fun dives follow strict safety standards.
Don't worry if you’re feeling anxious. That’s totally normal! Besides, here at Flow Divers, we have heaps of experience and specialize in building confidence in nervous divers. We take all the time you need to feel safe and comfortable in our pool before heading out to dive in the ocean, and our instructors have lots of little tricks and exercises to help you relax.
That’s a tricky question because climate change is making the weather and seasons harder to predict with each passing year! You can go diving on Koh Tao all year round. However, as a general rule, the best visibility and calmest waters are between March and September. From November to February, we sometimes experience rougher seas, but the quality of diving is usually still great.
Generally speaking, yes. So don't panic! If you’ve lost or misplaced your certification card, we can usually verify you through your certification agency’s online database using your full name and birthdate. However, very old certifications (that predate digital databases) and qualifications from obscure agencies can sometimes be difficult to find. We can usually chase down your certification eventually, but it’s never a bad idea to arrange a replacement to avoid losing dive time while we do that.
100% yes! Koh Tao is a fantastic family-friendly destination. Kids as young as 8 can try scuba diving with the Bubblemaker program, while those 10 and up can enjoy a Discover Scuba Diving experience or get fully certified on one of our Koh Tao beginners dive course programs (Scuba Diver or Open Water Diver).
Of course! We usually stick to group sizes of no more than four divers to one instructor or dive guide. However, if you’re travelling as a family or larger group, we simply provide extra staff to keep the overall ratio at a maximum of 4:1.
You sure can! Many of our guests travel solo, and we’re happy to buddy you up with another diver or one of our experienced guides to ensure you have the best diving experience.
Most people don’t need a medical exam before diving. However, if you’re participating in experience programs or certification courses with us, you must complete a medical questionnaire before entering the water. If you answer "Yes" to any questions, you may need a doctor’s approval before diving. Please contact us before booking if you’re unsure about anything on the form.
Not when you dive with Flow Divers, no. Local laws require all visitors to have adequate insurance coverage for diving on Koh Tao. But you don't need to have your own. As part of our commitment to safety, we include insurance as standard on all our dive trips and courses.
You can’t wear glasses with a dive mask, but you can wear contact lenses. Additionally, prescription masks are widely available on the island, and our helpful team is always happy to assist you in selecting a suitable option, should you wish to purchase your own.
Kids can try diving from age 8 and get certified from age 10 and up. For other courses, it depends on the specific program. For example, kids ages 12 and up can take an advanced diving course on Koh Tao, complete the Rescue Diver course, and even sign up for some specialty diving courses. However, for courses like Deep Diver and Wreck Diver, the minimum age is 15.
A basic level of comfort in the water should be considered a prerequisite for diving on Koh Tao. If you want to get certified, you must be able to float for 10 minutes and swim 200 meters (or snorkel 300 meters) without assistance.
No, there are several ways advanced divers can find enjoyment and gain more experience on Koh Tao. Specialty dive courses run regularly, and we’re always happy to schedule deep dive sites and wreck exploration dives on request.
Yes. You’ll need a minimum one-night stay, even if you only want to try diving on Koh Tao. Need help finding accommodation? We offer diving accommodation packages that include world-class hotel stays and top-notch service, ensuring you’re well-rested and comfortable during your diving holiday.
Your scuba certification never expires! However, if you haven’t dived in a year or more, you’ll need a Scuba Review session to refresh your skills before heading out for fun dives or continuing your diving education. If it’s been 5 years or more, you’ll need to take the full PADI ReActivate program.
That depends on what type of diving you’re doing. For example, if you’re taking on the challenge of our Koh Tao rescue course or a specialty program, we must take you to specific places to ensure we meet course requirements. For fun diving, dive sites are selected based on ocean conditions and your experience level. Ultimately, the boat captain makes the final call to ensure maximum safety and enjoyment. However, we regularly visit all the best dive sites and are always happy to accommodate specific requests (weather and ocean conditions permitting).
Heaps! Common species include anemonefish, angelfish, bannerfish, butterflyfish, barracuda, batfish, filefish, groupers, moray eels, parrotfish, pufferfish, and stingrays. You may even spot a turtle or whale shark if you're lucky!
Whale sharks are seasonal visitors, but sightings cannot be easily predicted or guaranteed. Your best chances to see one are at Chumphon Pinnacle, Southwest Pinnacle, or Sail Rock during March-May and September-November.
